| Title: | PSP Digital Comic Reader |
| Platform: | PSP |
| Media: | Free via playstation comic site |
| Rating: |
Synopsis
Launching in December 2009, the PSP is to get a digital media service that could herald the start of something major. We examine the application and have a sneak peak at whats coming soon to a PSP near you.
The digital comic reader requires firmware 6.20 but is a seperate download via the new playstation comic site. The download adds a new icon to the PSP cross media bar (XMB) and provides access to the newly launched digital comics. Geographic regions will have different launch material, for instance in the UK, the launch magazine is Transformers: All Hail Megatron #1.
On loading the application on your PSP, you are presented with a list of digital comic available to you. Comics can be purchased via PSN and stored on your memory card, the aim is to have a weekly update on comic book releases, akin to Vidzone releases.
The launch list has an impressive list of publishers associated including Marvel Comics, Disney, IDW, Ape Entertainment, Dabel Brothers, Red 5, 2000AD, Archie, and Insomnia. Digital media is not restricted to images and is meant to incorporate audio for a suitably engaging experience for the avid comic reader.
The control system is quite intuitive, in what is a very polished application. From the very first images flowing across your gaze through to the autoflow of the pages, you can tell, someone has put alot of effort into this. Whilst reading the comic in autoflow you quickly forget this is your trusty PSP. It just seems so natural, each shot scrolls across the relevant aspects of the story, as you would with the paper version. The blur between paper and electronic media has become so blurred, my initial skepticism turning rather sharply to, "why has this not been done before". Yes it is that good an idea.
My one reservation would be in relation to the prices of the media to be supplied, which may well be the sticking point for this applications audience. It seems a bit short sighted of Sony to make this a comic reader, when your pretty much looking at digital content (Newspapers, magazines, etc). Imagine getting your favourite games magazine, complete with sound, juddering, panning and the like - give it a try, its well worth the effort. Again Sony come through with a free application that just goes to show there is life for the PSP.
